I once discussed planting pumpkins with my mother-in-law. This year I planted seedlings and am already thinking about planting them in the ground. She can’t wait to get them back to their usual spot.
My mother-in-law told me that when she was young, she and her relatives only planted pumpkin seeds on Holy Thursday.
And this work was done early in the morning, when it was still dark outside the window. Then they all swam.
I always thought cucumbers were planted on Holy Thursday, but the older generation probably knows more.
But it was the cucumber’s turn in Radonitsa. The planting of cucumbers began immediately after returning from the cemetery. Hence the famous folk saying about tears and the garden.
I think there’s a reason for that. As we all know, Radonitsa isn’t tied to a specific date, meaning cucumbers were planted at different times from year to year. I’d like to point out that my mother-in-law always had plenty of cucumbers. She also managed to feed us. Even today, she doesn’t change the traditions.
