Natural tricks to eliminate bad dog urine odor
It is necessary to dispose of urine correctly to leave no trace and prevent the dog from repeating the act.
There are several reasons why our dog may urinate in the house: whether it’s a puppy still learning to relieve itself outside, due to illness, or because it occasionally leaks. But what all cases have in common is that, if the urine is not removed properly, not only will the stain, depending on the type of surface, but it will also leave an unpleasant odor, which can cause the animal to continue urinating in these inappropriate places.
There are various products on the market to eliminate urine odor, but there are also home remedies that are very useful and effective when we encounter an “accident” of this type in our home.
Before applying any of the solutions to clean and eliminate bad odors, it’s necessary to dry the urine, and of course, it’s much better if we do so immediately after the urine has been removed. Use absorbent paper towels to remove as much urine as possible, wearing gloves. Do this without rubbing to avoid further impregnating the surface, as this would have the opposite effect. In a second step, use more absorbent paper towels or a cloth soaked in water to finish removing the urine.
Once done, we can apply any of the following remedies:
White vinegar
Vinegar is a household ingredient widely used as a natural cleaner, as it has disinfecting properties and a penetrating scent capable of eliminating odorous marks. This is important because it leaves no trace and prevents our dog from repeating the stain. Vinegar is useful for cleaning both fresh and old stains on all types of floors and carpets (on the latter, it’s best not to scrub to prevent the pee from penetrating deeper into the fibers).
Mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part hot water in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to the affected area and, after 20 minutes, remove and dry with absorbent paper.
By the way, to prevent carpet accidents before they happen, it’s helpful to spray them with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.
Hydrogen peroxide and water
Another effective remedy for eliminating urine odor is to mix hydrogen peroxide with water in a spray bottle. After spraying the pee stain, let it sit for about 30 minutes, then remove it with an absorbent towel and rinse with water. This method is especially recommended for ceramic floors , and if you need to apply it to carpets, it’s better if they’re light-colored because it can bleach darker ones (in any case, it’s advisable to test on a hidden area).
For old stains or dried urine, hydrogen peroxide (2 tablespoons) is also recommended, but this time with baking soda (2 tablespoons) and liquid dishwashing detergent (1 tablespoon). Mix it in a deep container, as these three ingredients react, creating bubbles when mixed and stirred. When you have a thick paste, apply it to the affected area, let it sit for an hour, then remove it with a paper towel and rinse with water.
Lemon
Lemon is another highly valued ingredient for eliminating the unpleasant smell of dog urine because it has antifungal and antibacterial properties, and its scent acts as a repellent, discouraging dogs from repeating the process.
To use it, mix 100 ml of lemon juice with 50 ml of water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Spray the area, let it sit for about 30 minutes, and then rinse with water.
